Application for permission to work in the USA as an international student
Students from across the globe go to the USA to receive higher education. F-1 is the visa category for full-time international students. In case of the worst financial condition, a student may need to work off-campus. In such a situation US government permission is mandatory. So, international students and their sponsors should know how to write an application for permission to work in the USA as an international student.
When international students apply to any US university for admission, they submit bank statements along with other documents as proof of their financial solvency. The student himself or his parents could be sponsors.
There are some rules for F-1 visa category students to follow as long as they stay in the USA. The most important rule is that they cannot work off-campus to earn money.
Sometimes the university authority provides them with on-campus job opportunities. However, the scope of on-campus jobs is limited. More students may require jobs to meet educational and living expenses. Because life in the USA is expensive. The sponsor of any student may find it difficult to pay regularly for tuition fees, house rent, food, and other necessary expenses.
Moreover, the students’ sponsors may face unexpected financial crises. He may lose his job or his business may face recession. In this situation, the student has no other way except to work outside his university campus to manage money for continuing studies and to survive.
To uphold humanitarian values the USA has a wide reputation worldwide. US laws are also helpful for international students struggling with financial difficulties obtaining permission to work off-campus.
If any international student with an F1 visa status faces severe financial issues the student must talk to the Designated School Official (DSO). The designated school official will suggest the necessary steps. An international student must apply to the U. S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to work legally outside the university. To get permission to work off-campus USCIS approval is a must. The sponsor should apply on behalf of the international student. There should be a detailed description of the sponsor’s present financial condition in the application.
After proper scrutiny and necessary investigation, the USCIS may allow an international student to work off-campus to relieve the student from economic hardship.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am Mirza Galib from Bangladesh. I am Sifat’s financial sponsor and Sifat is my only son. Sifat is an international student at The University of Chicago on an F-1 visa. He is studying for a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. I have been spending money on Sifat’s educational and living costs for the last two years.
Due to an unexpected and significant change in my financial condition, I am informing you with extreme regret that I am currently suffering from a serious financial crisis. This has greatly affected my ability to continue providing financial support for Sifat’s educational and living expenses.
Over the last five months, my financial situation has dropped due to the following reasons:
- Five months ago, a sudden fire broke out in my grocery shop, and my shop was completely gutted. All the goods in the shop were burnt and I suffered a huge financial loss. I spent a lot of money renovating my grocery store and restoring my business. As a result, I am now in huge debt.
- Apart from my grocery store, I had some extra income from fish cultivation in my family pond in our village. But all the fish were swept away by the flash flood. The incident took place three months ago. I incurred a huge loss because of this unexpected incident.
All these unforeseen events put me in great difficulties and a financial crisis. Now it has become extremely tough for me to meet my everyday household expenses and fund the educational and living costs of my son Sifat in the USA.
As proof, I have sent some documents herewith this application such as bank statements, affidavits, photos of my burnt shop, and the devolution currency chart. Please let me know if you need more documents. I will surely send those.
Considering all these circumstances, I humbly request you to take appropriate legal action to allow my son Sifat to find a job to support his own educational and living expenses in this hard time. I will be highly pleased if you please stand beside my son during this adverse time.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I am the sponsor of Lubna. Lubna is my daughter, an international student currently studying at Wright State University, Ohio, on an F-1 visa. My name is Shamir Shakir and I am from Bangladesh. She is studying for a Master’s degree at Raj Soin College of Business which is the business school of Wright State University. Lubna’s subject is Master of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. It’s a STEM-designated program. For the last 10 months, I have been sending her money from Dhaka for her educational and living costs. Lubna has received a 50% scholarship from her university because of her excellent academic performance.
I manage my daughter’s expenses in the USA with the money I get by renting out my four-storey building. But last month due to heavy rain the soil from the foundation of my building was removed. As a result, the building tilted slightly. The residents of the building were evacuated safely with the help of the fire service and local people within the shortest possible time. So, my income from house rent has been stopped from this month. In addition, I have to take a loan from the bank to demolish the building and rebuild it.
In this situation, my income has dropped sharply. I am a government employee. I somehow run my household with my salary. At present, it has become a problem for me to send money for Lubna’s educational and other expenses in Ohio.
For your kind consideration, I have attached the notice of emergency evacuation of residents for safety by RAJUK, the building maintenance authority in Dhaka City. I also have attached some photographs of my building herewith. If you need more information, I will provide it.
This is my earnest appeal to you to permit my daughter Lubna to work off-campus considering my present financial situation. I will remain ever grateful to you for supporting me and my daughter in this hard time.
