Paragraph on Dowry System for HSC

To discuss the dowry system, first we have to understand what dowry is. Dowry is an amount of money or any property that is given to a husband or the family of the husband by the bride or the parents of the bride in marriage.

Whenever it becomes a common practice in a society, we call it a dowry system. The Dowry system is always a contemptible tradition. In our society, taking money from the parents of the bride in the name of marriage has been a long-time practice. This is an awfully shameful and gruesome act.

Some people who support this bad practice show some pretext in favor of the dowry system. They present the logic in favor of dowry by calling it a gift. Sometimes they argue that it is not dowry; rather, it is a sign of love.

Lower-income people face the worst reality of dowry. Collecting money or goods like furniture for dowry becomes so difficult for them. To marry off their beloved daughter, they collect money from local NGOs or rich people in return for high interest.

The Dowry system is a social disorder in our country. Even the rich and educated people cannot come out of this bad practice. The greedy people compel the parents of the bride to give them money as dowry.

The solution to this evil system is not easy. Already, there is a strict law against dowry, the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1980. But it is difficult to enforce the law for various reasons. The government and the influential people of society should launch a mass campaign against this heinous system.

Women can get rid of this hateful system through proper education and financial solvency. Proper education will also make men conscious of not taking dowry at the time of marriage.

The Dowry System in Bangladesh

The dowry system is a serious social issue in Bangladeshi society. The dowry system refers to giving money, gold, expensive goods, or other gifts to the groom’s family during or after marriage.

Many families, regardless of their financial status, face demands for dowry from the groom’s family, either before, during, or after marriage.

There are several reasons behind this problem and practice. Greed, poverty, social superstition, and old customs are some of the reasons for the prevailing dowry system in our country. Moreover, some families consider the dowry a matter of social status. As a result, this ill practice is prevalent in our society.

The dowry system causes great suffering to the bride and her family. Often, a bride faces serious insult and mental pressure if her parents cannot pay the demanded amount of money to her in-laws’ house as the dowry. Consequently, many innocent girls lose their peace, dignity, and security. Sometimes, it also leads to family violence, and the victim is always the wife.

However, we can reduce and even eliminate this problem through the efforts of people from all walks of life. Our families and parents should stop demanding and giving dowry. Already, there are lessons in textbooks highlighting the bad effects of the dowry system. Teachers should pay more attention to make the students understand the heinous effects of this system. The media can raise public awareness through various events.

We should change our social and mental attitude. We should keep in mind that marriage is a social bond. It is a bond between two human being and their families. This bond should be based on love, respect, and mutual understanding. Money and property cannot be the basis of a relationship. Therefore, we all should work together to build a society free of the dowry system.
