Padma Bridge is the largest bridge in Bangladesh with a combination of road and rail connectivity. It is a great medium of connectivity between the people of the south and the rest of the country.
The construction of the largest bridge started on 7 December 2014. The bridge connects 21 southern districts with the capital city. Its locations are Mawa and Zazira. The Dhaka end is located at Mawa in Munshiganj, and the other is at Zazira in Shariatpur.
A four-lane road is on the upper deck of the double-decker bridge, and a train line is on the lower deck. Fiber optic cables, electric lines, and gas pipelines connect north and south through the bridge.
According to the information on the government’s official website, the bridge is 22 meters wide and 6.15 kilometers long. The contractor of the bridge was China Major Bridge Engineering Co. Ltd.
World Bank was supposed to provide loans to construct the bridge. Alleging the possibility of corruption World Bank canceled the proposed loan. As a result, it was a great challenge for Bangladesh to materialize such a big project with her own funding. However, Bangladesh took the challenge of constructing the bridge without any foreign loan. So, it was undoubtedly a matter of pride for Bangladesh to complete the construction with the money of the public.
Although so many financial, environmental, and construction issues came in the way of implementing the project the bridge was inaugurated on 25 June 2022 and opened for transportation the next day.
