Two cats and a piece of bread

Long ago, there lived two cats in a house. One day, they stole a piece of bread from a neighboring house. They went to a safe place near the house to divide the bread. The cats could not divide the bread into equal halves because each cat wanted to have the larger portion of the bread. They got involved in a dispute over the bread. The two cats could not settle the dispute and continued quarreling. Finding no other way, they decided to go to a monkey. The money was considered one of the wisest animals in their area.

Hearing the problem of the cats, the monkey told them that it was a difficult task to solve the problem. But the monkey assured the cats that he would do justice for them. He would divide the bread into equal halves to ensure justice. The monkey brought a pair of scales to ensure perfect sharing. He divided the bread into two parts and put both parts on each scale. One part of the bread was larger and heavier than another part. The monkey took a bite from the larger part of the bread, saying that for the sake of justice, he was doing so.

He continued doing so until there remained a small piece of bread. The cats requested the monkey to return the bread. The monkey replied that he worked hard to settle the dispute between the cats. So, as an honorarium, he should have the remaining part of the bread. Saying this, he ate the last part of the bread.

Though the cats lost their whole bread, they learned a good lesson from the incident. The act of the monkey taught them the lesson that they should not quarrel with their own group members.

Moral of the story: Don’t quarrel with your friend over a trifling matter; others may take advantage of it.

Story of the Two Cats and the Piece of Bread

In a pretty small town in a tropical country, there lived two cats. Their residence was in a beautiful three-storied building. They were on good terms as they lived in the same building.

But disputes were a common scenario between the cats when they found food to eat. One day, it was a beautiful morning. The cats were walking up and down the stairs of the house. Unexpectedly, they found a big piece of bread on the stairs of the building. They were hungry, so both of them became very happy getting the bread.

To eat the bread at ease, they went to the garden close to their building. As it was a single piece of bread, they got involved in an altercation about how to divide the bread. There was no way to divide the bread into equal halves. Moreover, one cat could not believe the other because dividing bread was an important issue. They started exchanging heated words on this matter.

Right at that moment, an aged monkey was passing through the garden. He saw that the two cats were quarrelling. The monkey came to the spot and asked about the reason for the dispute.

The monkey was familiar to them. They knew that the monkey was intelligent. So, in such a situation, the cats breathed a sigh of relief to have such an intelligent monkey among them.

The cats told the monkey the details of the incident and requested the monkey to divide the bread between the cats. The monkey assured them and said, ‘’Don’t worry. You are my neighbor. So, I should do something good for you.’’

Taking the bread in his hand, the monkey divided the bread into two parts. The monkey asked the cats whether the pieces of bread were equal or not. The cats replied that one part is bigger than the other. Instantly, the monkey bit into the bigger part of the bread. The monkey said, ‘’I believe in justice. I must ensure that everyone is getting an equal part.’’ His bite was so big that now the big part of the bread became smaller and the small part became bigger.

To make the bigger part equal to the smaller part, the monkey again bit into the bigger part. But he took a big bite just like before. So, again, the smaller part became bigger. The monkey continued this act of dividing the bread in an unethical way until he had eaten the entire loaf.

The two cats kept watching the activities of the monkey and became disappointed and disheartened. They could realize their mistake of inviting a third party to settle a trivial issue between them.

Moral: A third party takes advantage when we quarrel with our near and dear ones.
